New exhibitions at MAC Birmingham

Now that galleries have opened, and the sun is shining here are four new exhibitions at MAC Birmingham for you to visit:

CAROLINE WALKER: WOMEN’S WORK

Women’s Work is Caroline Walker’s most comprehensive exhibition to date. It examines the often, unseen jobs performed by women, such as tailors and chambermaids and viewed from the side lines in their otherwise invisible worlds. 

Comprising of preparatory studies, small and large-scale paintings, Women’s Work provides a unique insight into Walker’s artistic processes as a painter with an intuitive understanding of her subjects.

Caroline Walker will also be in face to face conversation with Tracey Warren, Professor of Sociology at the University of Nottingham on July 22^nd at 6.30 pm in the gallery.

MAXINE WALKER: UNTITLED

Reintroducing a pioneering artist whose practice focused on representations of Black womanhood, the exhibition is a poignant exploration of identity by a young artist at the height of her career, using photography to interrogate the intricacies of skin, Blackness and being. 

Active between 1985–1997 this is Maxine Walker’s first solo exhibition in her home city of Birmingham.

WE ARE HERE

We Are Here is an exhibition by UK Black Female Photographers (UKBFTOG), which evolved through an open call out and selection process and addresses diverse themes and ideas such as: isolation and freedom during lockdown, Black female identity, the beauty of our natural landscape, Black Lives Matter protests and a critique of the fashion industry.

The works shown here represent one common thread: ‘A colourful celebration of life’.  The artists selected are both emerging and established within their photography careers.

Artists featured in this exhibition are: Carla Thomas, Dami Fawehinmi, Denise Maxwell, Dominique Nok, Gifty Dzenyo, Naomi Williams, RUBY LDN and Zacchia Moore.

MADE AT MAC: PAINTING WITH COLOUR (INSPIRED BY THE SCOTTISH COLOURISTS)

This exhibition showcases recent artwork created by the highly talented students who attend Practical Visual Enquiry and Art in Context courses at MAC, taught by professional artist tutor Helen Tarr.

During Autumn 2019, students were inspired by Helen’s project ‘The Scottish Colourists; Creating Impact with Colour’ immersing themselves in an artistic exploration of colour, line and form – across landscape, portrait and still-life genres.

It is not necessary to book in advance for MAC’s galleries, please read our Visitor Guidelines before your visit. Due to reduced capacity across our building we will closely monitor the number of people in our exhibitions at one time.
