We are delighted to welcome Professor Robin Nelson for his talk ‘PRACTICE AS RESEARCH IN THE FUTURE ACADEMY: Attending Differently‘ as the last speaker in our Art as a Practice of Research series for 2020-21.

In an increasingly corporatized academy, what role might the arts play? Is the function of Higher Education in the Arts to produce elite performers, or might arts research generate new knowing, equivalent to that in other disciplines? Does research now simply equate with income-generation? Can an artwork stand alone as evidence of a research inquiry, or does it require an exposition? In Prof. Nelson’s approach it is necessary to attend differently. Reflecting on changes in HE and following Derrida in envisioning a future university, Prof. Nelson points up the differences in the cultures of Practice Research and Artistic Research as they have developed in shifting contexts over the past two decades.

Prof. Robin Nelson.Now Emeritus Professor of Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, Robin was formerly, Director of Research and Professor of Theatre and Intermedial Performance (2010 – 2015). He is also an Emeritus Professor of Manchester Metropolitan University where he worked for many years. Twice an RAE/REF sub-panel member, he has himself published widely on the performing arts and media. Robin has just completed, at Palgrave’s request, a second edition of his seminal Practice as Research in the Arts: Principles, Protocols, Pedagogies, Resistances (2013) to be published later in 2021, entitled Practice as Research in the Arts (and Beyond): Principles, Processes, Contexts, Achievements.
