Material Encounters intends to extend and interrogate the boundaries of materiality within the context of contemporary art. The cluster provides a critical intellectual space for the exploration of embodiment, subjectivity and aesthetic practices as they are encountered through material and theoretical investigations.

Material Encounters

The Material Encounters research cluster is based at the Birmingham Institute of Creative Arts, Birmingham City University, UK. We are an inclusive cluster made up of artists and researchers at different stages working across a range of disciplines and approaches.

Uncertain Knowledge(s) colloquium

The inaugural Material Encounters summer colloquium Uncertain Knowledge(s) took place on the 7th July 2021 and was a huge success!

Our keynote speaker Emma Cocker spoke alongside a dynamic mix of presentations, expositions and lightening talks from a range of researchers and artist-researchers working across disciplines who all examined materiality and its uncertainties in the arts.
